By signing with Disney to adapt the science fiction novel A shortcut in time ( A Wrinkle of Time ) by Madeleine L’Engle, Ava DuVernay became the first African American to make a feature film with over 100 million budget.
It was time. Ava DuVernay, director of SELMA (our review) , is now the first African-American woman of cinema history to stage a feature of over 100 million.
After being courted by to realize BLACK PANTHER and Dreamworks for the science fiction movie Intelligent life with Lupita Nyong’o, the filmmaker finally chose Disney to stage adaptation of A shortcut in time (A Wrinkle of Time) , book by Madeleine L’Engle published in 1962.
In doing so, it marks an important step in the Seventh Art. According to the blog, it indeed becomes the first African American to whom we entrust a big budget film. Also according to the site, only two other representatives of the other sex have achieved this major productions: Kathryn Bigelow with K19: The trap depths (and also the first woman to have received the Oscar for Best Director for The Hurt Locker in 2009), and Patty Jenkins with WONDER WOMAN whose trailer wowed the audience at the last Comic-Con in San Diego.
DuVernay used her account to thank Disney and noted in passing that past time for that to happen. The scenario of a shortened time ( A Wrinkle of Time ) will be written by Jennifer Lee, co-director and co-writer of The Snow Queen (biggest Disney hit to date with more than 1.2 billion global revenues). In the credits of this are Oprah Winfrey, the queen of American PAF.
If women are still a minority behind the camera, the trend is changing … slowly. The success of DuVernay, Jenkins and Bigelow could still inspire studios. Marvel has indeed recently announced plans to entrust the reins of CAPTAIN MARVEL with Brie Larson. Another first for a superhero film from the studio of rival DC.
Before coming here, Ava DuVernay started with very small budget productions such as I Will Follow , which would have cost 50 thousand dollars depending, or Middle of Nowhere with 200 000 dollars and for which it has become already the first African-American to win the award for best director at Sundance. It is in 2015 that she made her debut in “the big boys” with Selma, whose budget amounts to $ 20 million . It transforms this trial run; this historical drama, inspired by the struggle of Martin Luther King for civil rights, is appointed and Golden Globe as Best Picture.
While waiting to discover a shortcut through time , the release date is not yet known, fans can catch up with Queen Sugar , series created by Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey for OWN and each of the six episodes will be directed by a woman. The show, the first trailer was posted online, has also been renewed for a second season.
